Water contaminants come from various sources: dust and germs from the air, odors and foul taste from organic decomposition processes, salts from contact with rocks and minerals, and both volatile and non-volatile organic compounds from industrial pollution. In addition, chemicals such as chlorine are intentionally added for sanitation purposes. Most water treatment technologies handle some of these contaminants well, and others not so well, but no single technology is able to remove all contaminants completely.
